What is Smart Standard pay as you go dentistry?
Smart Standard is Smart Dental’s affordable pay as you go option for routine dental care, designed to give you more choice and more access to appointments. There is no joining fee or monthly subscription. You pay for the treatment you need under Standard pricing.
I received an email inviting me back. What am I booking?
You may have received an invitation to book a £30 Smart Standard check-up. This is not an offer of an NHS appointment. Please contact your practice before booking if you would like to understand why you have been offered Standard rather than an NHS appointment.
Has Essentials changed its name to Smart Standard?
Yes. Essentials is now called Smart Standard. If an older email or document refers to Essentials, it refers to the option now called Standard. Use the current information on this page when checking prices and booking.
Is Smart Standard NHS treatment, and how is it different from NHS and private care?
No. Smart Standard is a separate, affordable non-NHS scheme for routine dental care, with its own fees, so booking a Smart Standard appointment does not mean you are booking NHS treatment. We receive a fixed NHS budget, and the NHS asks us to focus it on children, complex care and emergencies rather than routine dental visits. Private appointments follow the practice’s usual private prices. If you have existing NHS arrangements or are on an NHS waiting list, ask your practice how a Smart Standard appointment would apply to you before booking.
Can I get an NHS appointment for a dental emergency or for my children?
NHS care is focused on children, complex care and emergencies. Contact your practice if you have a dental emergency or would like to ask about NHS appointments for your children. The team can explain availability, eligibility and how to arrange care for your family. Regular check-ups for the whole family help us spot tooth decay early, prevent emergencies and give advice on keeping everyone’s teeth healthy.
Which treatments does Smart Standard cover?
Smart Standard covers routine dental care, such as check-ups, fillings and hygiene appointments. For example, a single filling or extraction costs £50 and a single crown or denture costs £350, each including the check-up charge. See our Standard fees table for the full list of treatments and prices. Cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening and veneers are not included and are charged separately at private prices. Ask your practice for its cosmetic treatment price list.

NHS charges shown are the rates in England from 1 April 2026. An NHS charge covers all treatment needed in that band during a course of treatment.
Do I need to pay a deposit before my appointment?
Yes. A £30 deposit is required to secure your Smart Standard appointment and is deducted from your bill on the day. This helps us reduce missed appointments and keep appointment times available for everyone. If you only need the £30 routine check-up, there is nothing further to pay. Your deposit is refundable if you cancel with at least 48 hours’ notice. Cancellations with less than 48 hours’ notice are non-refundable. We will contact you before your appointment as a reminder. Contact your practice if you need to change your appointment.
How will Smart Standard benefit me, and how soon can I book?
You can keep seeing the dental team who know you, helping to prevent problems and spot decay, infections and other issues early, before you need emergency treatment. Smart Standard also offers broader appointment availability, which may include early morning, evening and weekend appointments, depending on your practice. Contact the team or use the booking link on your practice’s page to check current appointment times.
